            UNITS          RELOCATION

The major unit at Schofield Barracks is the 25th Infantry Division which commands several Brigade Combat Teams and subordinate units.

25th INFANTRY DIVISION 808-655-6162
The 25th Infantry Division "Tropic Lightning" started at Schofield Barracks in 1941 and right away was sent to the Solomon Islands to counter the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1942, then fought for 165 straight days on Luzon Island in the Philippine liberation campaign. Tropic Lightning defended the city of Pusan in South Korea with other U.S. and U.N. forces in 1950 and came home in 1954. Its next deployment was in 1965, during the Vietnam War, where it fought for 5 years during the Tet Offensive of 1968 and in Cambodia in 1970. Like many infantry divisions at the time, Lightning was sent to support Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti during the mid-1990s, and in early 2002 were sent to Bosnia-Herzegovina. Then, in 2004, the division deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, returned home in 2005, and was deployed back to Northern Iraq twice until 2008. In 2010, Tropic Lightning participated in Task Force Lightning where it watched over the Anbar and Baghdad provinces in order to support Iraqi forces and the withdrawal of other U.S. troops.

3rd BRIGADE COMBAT TEAM 808-655-9717
The 3rd Brigade Combat Team, also known as the Broncos, started at Schofield Barracks in 1963, just two years before being sent to the Vietnam War. This deployment, in combination with their 2,000 tons of equipment, became the largest in history at the time. After seeing action in 12 campaigns across Pleiku, Quang Ngai province, and Dau Tieng, the unit was inactivated back at the barracks in 1972. When the 25th Infantry Division transformed into a light infantry division in 1985, the 3rd BCT was brought back. Though some of its battalions deployed over the next several years (to Haiti and the Sinai Peninsula), the entire brigade did not deploy again until 2004 when they were sent to Afghanistan and participated in many missions across a variety of provinces. In 2007, as a part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Broncos sent over 3,500 troops to Kirkuk, Iraq, to train Iraqi forces and complete a number of improvement projects crucial to the Iraqis continued success.

25th COMBAT AVIATION BRIGADE (CAB) 808-655-2564/2565
Activated at Schofield Barracks in 1957, the "Wings of Lightning" were originally designated as the 25th Aviation Company. The company earned two Meritorious Unit Commendations and two Valorous Unit Awards for its involvement in 12 Vietnam War campaigns. In the early 1990s, several Wings of Lightning units participated in Operations Desert Shield and Storm and Hurricane Andrew relief efforts in Florida, then earned another Valorous Unit Award for involvement in Somalia. CAB task forces also deployed in support of Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti and Operation Joint Forge in Bosnia-Herzegovina. When the Global War on Terrorism began, the CAB supported Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom V with tens of thousands of combat hours flown. 2009-10 saw aviation operations at COB Speicher in Tikrit, Iraq, until the brigade was needed in Kandahar, Afghanistan, during Operation Enduring Freedom 12-13. Their mission as "Task Force Wings" earned them Americas Aviation Unit of the Year (given by the Army Aviation Association) for many tactical developments and for being the first Army Medical Evacuation Helicopters to carry blood products on board. The 25th CAB earned three more Meritorious Unit Commendations for service in the Middle East between 2004-2009 and continues to serve Schofield Barracks from near and far.
