Local Information

Wahiawa is the closest community to Schofield Barracks, with about 16,000 people, and is in Honolulu City and County, which has a population of about 954,000 people. Other nearby communities include Mililani (49,000 people between two settlements), Waipahu (38,000), Aiea (9,000), Waipio (12,000), Pearl City (48,000), and the North Shore communities of Waialua, Mokuleia, and Haleiwa, which have populations of less than 4,000 each. The nearest major city is Honolulu, with a population of about 390,000.

It is about 4 miles from downtown Wahiawa to Schofield Barracks; this takes about 12 minutes to commute, but the area is somewhat congested and travel times can vary significantly. All of the communities mentioned above are about 15 to 18 minutes away from Schofield Barracks, in good traffic, except Honolulu, which is about half an hour away.

Local Housing Rental Prices: The average one bedroom apartment rent in the Schofield Barracks area ranges from $600 to $1200 per month, with a median of about $900 per month.

Local Housing Purchase Prices: The average price for a house in the Schofield Barracks communities is about $526,000, compared to $525,000 for Hawaii. Townhouses' prices vary greatly; a random sampling of nearby townhouses ranged from $369,000 to $989,000.

Short Description of the Area: There are several towns near Schofield Barracks, ranging from small places like Kunia Camp (about a thousand people) to medium sized cities like Waipahu. Schofield Barracks is in the north-central area of the island of Oahu, the main, most populated island of Hawaii. This area is in a valley between two mountain ranges; the island is hilly or mountainous, but there are many plains with sugar cane and tropical fruit fields, some forest area, and a large number of beaches. Oahu is itself about half the size of Rhode Island, the smallest US state, but has a similar population (about 1 million); nowhere is far, and people live close together.

Climate and Weather: The area has a tropical climate, with year round temperatures between the mid-80s and low-70s; about 5 degrees cooler in winter and 5 higher in summer. There is a slight difference in rainfall from winter to summer, less than three inches a year - the rains are a little heavier in winter. Disastrous weather - hurricanes, tornadoes, and other severe storms - is rare. The islands are volcanically active, but the main volcano in Hawaii is on another island, and there is no expectation of an eruption on Oahu in the near future. Overall the area is very pleasant.

Transportation: Honolulu is served by TheBus (one word) system, which reaches all around the city. Transit away from the city is less far reaching.

Local Culture: Hawaii is very removed from the mainland US, and has a different set of customs and habits, its own local cuisine, casual dress styles, a strong local dialect, and other social features, a blend of native Hawaiian, Asian, US mainlander, and other Pacific influences. Ask locals, politely.
